One Very Cool Thing™ in CSS is CSS Sprites.

CSS Sprites give us an opportunity to do several Very Useful Things™.

1. They allow us to pre-load graphics into the memory cache for multiple pages up front, so load times are Way Faster™.

2. They allow us to alternate images to create Thrilling Animation™.

3. They give us Amazing Super Powers™.

Okay, that last one might be a Bit of an Exagerration™, but take a look at what you can do with CSS Sprites.

Sloth:

I think this "creature" in the "mysterious" photographs is a sloth that has had all hair removed somehow, much like the previous "creature" that appeared to be a live skinned monkey, and not a "demon" as asserted.

If you haven't seen a movie, it won't be as funny and could have spoilers... so be careful.

There are some important things that must inevitably change in television media.

First, the Neilsen ratings system has to be flushed down the toilet. This has been obvious for quite some time, based simply on the statistical irrelevance of the data it allegedly collects, plus the huge potential corruptibility of that data.

It seems extremely likely that a new system will of necessity be put into place to supplant the dominance of this system of television viewer data collection, which apparently still dominates this multi-billion dollar industry we call television.

Second, in like fashion to the way that unions were created to keep workers from getting completely screwed over by corporate scumbags, new measures will need to be taken to prevent other types of corporate scumbags from making the world a worse place.

As more and more television networks appear to be either purchased or destroyed in the mindless pursuit of the almighty dollar, such as the SciFi Channel (now SyFy) and the Anime channel, sooner or later a new profit structure will have to be created.

Hulu and similar internet services are making it possible to deliver selective television entertainment content via broadband. One positive benefit of this is the minimization of advertising. Another is the evasion of the constant stream of poisonous negativity that is the television news media.

The television news is like a cancer rotting the minds and spirits of television viewers. People's perceptions are perpetually being altered and misled by the pseudo-truths of the news media. The more that people are divorced from this influence in their lives, the less insane and idiotic American culture will appear to the rest of the world.

If there were some way to prevent the Rupert Murdocks of the world from imposing their extremely biased and twisted points of view on the masses, the world would be a better place, but until a solution to this problem is found, it just seems like a good idea to have as little exposure to television news as humanly possible. It is essentially a machine for the regurgitation of memes and lies for the most part, and actively censors or suppresses much of the truth anyway.

What I propose is the creation of new non-profit media corporations to foster creativity and prevent the kind of pandering garbage our culture is slowly sinking farther and farther into.

Fans of television series created by people like Joss Whedon and Bryan Fuller have been repeatedly disappointed by cancellations. In the case of Wonderfalls this happened in only four episodes.

More and more the common media outlets are letting us down. Whether this is a product of bias, greed, or simple incompetence, the reality is that corporate control of the arts has failed, and should be replaced by a new model for creator-controlled content.

We need television networks controlled by alliances of established creative professionals who are committed to making entertainment that is unusual, intelligent, and not merely a vehicle for the sales of products.

We need an MTV that shows music videos, a SciFi Channel that shows science fiction, and more channels that are true to their labeling and refuse to give up their labels in favor of ratings whoring and fad TV. Instead of less categorized entertainment and more generic blah channels showing false reality TV garbage, we need more categorized entertainment. Instead of MTV showing the fake Real World, we need ten MTVs each showing different categories of music. We need SciFi channel, Fantasy channel, Paranormal channel, Baking channel, Soup channel, Cheese channel, etc. etc. etc.

We do not need ten thousand channels with meaningless generic names all showing reruns of Cops or Law and Order.

Television is the most powerful influence on our culture whether we like it or not. If you want to change the culture, don't just change the channel with the remote; really change the channels.

The last time I read about this they said the paranormal activity had ceased, but apparently it started up again.

They should just set up webcams.

The Hebrew calendar is different from the Gregorian calendar.

Today, Fri, 13 November 2009 = 26th of Cheshvan, 5770.

9/11/01 was 23rd of Elul, 5761.

More kabbalistic mysticism... )

"I write this now because I have recently been contacted by several highly placed media and intelligence sources that have made it clear to me that hoaxed events and story-lines are imminent that will attempt to further ramp up the fear machine regarding UFOs and ETs. After all, to have an enemy, you must make the people hate and fear a person, a group of people, or in this case an entire category of beings."

A reboot of the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy franchise, starting over from the beginning with a new cast... now with punchlines!

The Book (narrator) and newscaster - Peter Serafinowicz

Arthur Dent - David Mitchell

Ford Prefect - Robert Webb

Tricia McMillan (AKA Trillian) - Sarah Alexander

Zaphod Beeblebrox - Jeff Bridges or Simon Pegg (odd to have to choose between two people who played very different roles in "How to Lose Friends and Alienate People")

Marvin the Paranoid Android (voice) - Rowan Atkinson

Eddie (voice) - Bill Hader

Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz (voice) - James Earl Jones

Vogon guard - James Bachman or Nick Frost

Slartibartfast - Steve Coogan

Hotblack Desiato - Meat Loaf

Deep Thought (voice) - Ron Haddrick

Vroomfondel - Jack Davenport

Majikthise - Richard Coyle

Max Quordlepleen (host) - Eric Idle

Okay, this is just a dream of mine. I want to see the awful Hitchhikers Guide movie scrapped and forgotten and replaced with something more true to the source material.

Long ago a friend in Britain recommended I watch Black Books, a BBC comedy series. This recommendation was based on my love of British comedies. Some of my favorites:

Red Dwarf
Spaced
Coupling
Blackadder
The Young Ones
Alexei Sayle's STUFF
The Comic Strip Presents...
The Fall and Rise of Reginal Perrin
Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy
The Monty Python films and television series
Not the Nine O'Clock News
The Goodies
Fawlty Towers
Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, anything with Simon Pegg in it, (because he's brilliant)
Bernard and the Genie (Christmas movie)
That Mitchell and Webb Look
That Mitchell and Webb Situation
Magicians (Mitchell and Webb again)
Extras
The Peter Serafinowicz Show

So, when I finally got off my arse and watched this wonderful show, I was pleased to see the familiar face of Dylan Moran of Shaun of the Dead.

Black Books is goddamned hilarious right from the getgo, so if you're a fan of British comedies at all, I heartily recommend it. It's a bit older, being from 2000, but it somehow slipped under my international radar, being that I'm not a brit, so maybe you've missed out too and I don't have to feel quite as stupid.

I made 'Manda a stack of pancakes for breakfast, and a glass of orange juice. The fluffy orange cat licked the syrup bottle and made the cutest face.
